The couple tied the knot in a Manhattan courthouse last September

“The thing is, marriage is very hard. That is the sentence you should lead with. It’s really effing hard,” said Hailey, 22. The two first met back in 2009, through her father and Justin’s mother, who were friends. And although she thought Bieber, 25, was cute, the pair only developed a real friendship years later, but nothing more.

“Over time he became my best guy friend. I was running around with him as his homie, but we weren’t hanging out [romantically],” she said. Although they eventually dated briefly three years ago, it didn’t end well for the two of them, and they lost touch completely until June 2018, when they ran into each other in Miami, they told Vogue.

“The common denominator, I promise you, is always church. By then we were past the drama. I just gave him a hug. By the end of the conference, he was like, ‘We’re not going to be friends.’ I was like, ‘We’re not?’” And that was that – around a month later, they got engaged.

The couple is a real case of opposites attract. Justin said he is the emotionally unstable one in the relationship, while Hailey is logical and structured, which he needs. “With the lifestyle I live, everything is so uncertain. I need one thing that’s certain. And that is my baby boo.”

Hailey admitted that in the first few weeks of being married, she felt incredibly lonely and homesick, and struggled with the fact that so many people assumed they would fail. “I prayed to feel peace about the decision, and that’s where I landed. I love him very much. I have loved him for a long time.”

Perhaps surprisingly to many, Justin was celibate for months prior to meeting and marrying Hailey, a decision he made after years of bad behaviour. And while it was one reason why they married after just a few weeks, he guarantees it wasn’t the only reason. “When I saw her last June, I just forgot how much I loved her and how much I missed her and how much of a positive impact she made on my life. I was like, Holy cow, this is what I’ve been looking for.”

The couple, who is still planning to host a full-on wedding, are enjoying lots of down time spent in their Canadian home now, they revealed, enjoying the little things together like watching films and dancing in the kitchen. But the singer admits he wants his wife to not put so much pressure on herself to succeed at marriage. “I think we can be married and still have fun and enjoy our adolescence. That’s something we’re talking about.”

Hailey adds, in a refreshingly candid way, “I’m fighting to do this the right way, to build a healthy relationship. We’re coming from a really genuine place. But we’re two young people who are learning as we go. I’m not going to sit here and lie and say it’s all a magical fantasy. It’s always going to be hard. It’s a choice. You don’t feel it every single day,” she said, adding that there’s still something beautiful about being married and fighting for it. “At the end of the day, he’s my best friend. I never get sick of him.”
