Harry approached Prince Charles, who celebrates his 70th birthday next week, to step in after his then-fiancée’s father, Thomas Markle, was unable to attend the nuptials.

In a new documentary, Prince, Son and Heir: Charles at 70, which airs today on BBC One, Harry says, “I asked him to and I think he knew it was coming and he immediately said, ‘Yes, of course, I’ll do whatever Meghan needs and I’m here to support you.’”

As Prince Charles led Meghan to Harry’s side during the historic ceremony at St George’s Chapel in Windsor, the prince turned to his dad and said, “Thank you, Pa.”

Prince Charles also escorted Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland, by the arm and lead her out of the church together with wife Camilla after the ceremony. Of this moment, Duchess Camilla commented, “it’s the things he does behind the scenes that people don’t know about. I don’t think people realise quite how kind he is.”
